To celebrate G-Mother's achievement of eighty wonderful years, a family weekend was planned which involved many, many meals and provided even more memories. The Foodette and I hosted The San Francisco Treats and my sister, Chewbacca, at our house but rode over to the Parental Unit's HQ for an epic breakfast on Saturday morning.
The smell of frying bacon welcomed us as we neared the back door; the first cool front of the Fall had persuaded my female parental unit, Roux Maker, to open the windows and share that olfactory treat with the neighborhood. This was going to be a good day.
While Roux Maker was tending to the bacon, my male parental unit, He Adds Condiments (HAC), was busy at work prepping the biscuit dough from scratch and I heard the word buttermilk thrown about the kitchen no less than three times. Things were getting even better!
When Gotham is threatened, the Bat Signal is activated and the caped crusader is called to action. When someone is just slightly annoyed, the Bat Biscuit is activated and an overweight and slightly less agile public defender will appear to prevent further irritation.

In the mean time, The San Francisco Treats strategized and began executing a terrific scrambled egg plan while I bounced back and forth around the various dishes and visited with G-Mother between bites of bacon. The bacon was crisped but not overcooked and it was difficult to slow down eating the two-bite strips. I just had to walk away.
A roux was started with the addition of flour to the bacon grease that eventually yielded a rich cream gravy after the slow and steady combination of the two, plus a few ladles of milk and dashes of black pepper, was complete. Around the time this culinary awesomeness was done, the biscuits were ready to come out of the oven.

(Straight From L.A. To The Carolinas, Dip Them Suckers In Aunt Jemima)The biscuits had puffed impressively and developed a slightly crunchy exterior which surrounded a deliciously soft and buttery southern classic. The buttermilk added a measurable depth to the flavor of the biscuits and while these treasures did just fine by themselves, it was about time they got cozy with the gravy while sharing some real estate with the scrambled eggs and bacon.
(I Only Took One Slice To Leave Enough For Everyone)The eggs were fluffy and cooked right up to the edge of delicious without drying out or turning rubbery while a dash of salt and pepper helped round out the flavor. The San Francisco treats were patient with this batch.
The gravy activated every savory taste bud imaginable, while its creaminess sang in harmony with cozy bed of the biscuit that it was layered over. This gravy was exactly what your parents warned you about. Why does something that tastes so good have to be so bad for me?
For dessert I coated the inside of a biscuit with orange marmalade and enjoyed the palate cleansing that its sweet citrus offered. It was one great family breakfast and it took a team effort from The Parental Units and The San Francisco Treats to get it done, outstanding! Happy Birthday to G-Mother!
